Background:

Founded in 1961, at its outset the American University in Cairo Press published just one to six books per year. Currently AUC Press publishes about 60 books a year and has a backlist of over 1,000 books in fields such as archaeology, ancient Egypt, architecture, art, history, literature, politics, economics, religious studies, language learning, and maps and travel guides (current and past catalogs can be found on its website here). The Press has a worldwide reputation for publishing Arabic literature translated into English which has developed over many years beginning with the initiative to translate the complete works of Naguib Mahfouz (incidentally, the AUC Press is said to have published the first English translation of Mahfouz when it published Miramar in 1978). In 1996, the AUC Press launched The Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature for the best contemporary novel published in Arabic and not yet translated into English; the Press then translates and publishes the winning title. The AUC Press holds talks and signing parties for many of its writers upon publication of a new book (keep up with such events by following them on Facebook). AUC Press literature in translation is available globally through bookstores and online bookstores, and increasingly in e-book and digital forms.

What you’ll find here:

If you’re a fan of Arabic literature that’s been translated into English, then you’re probably already familiar with the AUC Press logo. AUC Press has more titles of Arabic literature translated into English than any other single publishing house worldwide. The AUC Press Bookstore Downtown is a wonderful place to spend hours browsing and exploring books, both those published by AUC Press as well as a variety of US and UK publishers. Inside you will find an enormous selection of Arabic literary works in English as well as shelves of scholarly work on Egypt and the Arab world, art books, cookbooks, maps and guidebooks. Upstairs are more books, including a sizable section devoted to English literature, reference works and dictionaries, as well as a section for computer and self-help books. For those learning to read and speak Arabic, the AUC Press has a great collection of course books and other learning resources such as dictionaries and reference works for both Egyptian and Modern Standard Arabic.

For the time being, the front entrance to the store is blocked off and the store can be accessed only through the campus entrance on Mohammed Mahmoud Street (be prepared to show a form of identification). Note that there is another smaller bookstore in Zamalek in the student dormitory buildings, as well as two stores out at the new campus. All of the stores offer 20% off on the first Saturday of the month. Smaller selections of AUC Press books can also be found in the Townhouse bookstore, Oum El Dounia’s book section, Abdel Zaher Book Binding, the basement of Madbouly, as well as in other local bookstores.
